HAIR HAS NO GENDER

A lifelong LGTBQIA2S+ ally, I’ve been advocating for gender free/time based pricing and services for over 35 years.

I absolutely love being a client of Jessica’s! She is talented and thoughtful, and makes sure to work with you on creating a hairstyle (she does both cut and color) that both looks amazing and only requires the level of maintenance you can put into it. I always look great and feel confident after an appointment. On top of that, she is a wonderful person, who is a joy to spend time with (an important consideration when you are in the chair for the time it takes to get a cut and color!). I would also point out, during the COVID-19 pandemic, she is scrupulously careful about and is certified in infection control, always takes all precautions (and requests that her client do likewise), including mask use, and gets COVID-19 tested every two weeks, so I feel safe during appointments with her as well.

Salon

Shy

Read about how I ended up Salon Shy & how I help ease some of that anxiety.

I have always wanted my chair to be a safer space, and a judgement free zone, after struggling with conflicting feelings about salons in middle/high school. I was a teen with undiagnosed ADHD, and felt uncomfortable and misunderstood, on a good day. I dreaded stepping into a new salon and meeting new stylists. I was very much “androgynous,” it was my look, but also how I felt. Nonbinary was not in the vernacular yet. Stylists tried to soften and feminize my hair when I very clearly stated otherwise. That’s how I learned to cut hair, fixing it to suit my taste. I have always loved HAIR and found a lot of power, and joy expressing myself however I damn well pleased. I needed a stylist that wasn’t in cahoots with my parents!

Then I found MY stylist, and I learned to love going to the salon. I kept my hair Annie Lennox short and saw her every few weeks. She knew I was paying for my own cuts, since my parents were pissed I looked like a boy. She never pressured me into buying products I couldn’t afford. She always seemed genuinely happy to see me, she listened to me, and she cut my hair exactly how I asked, short A.F. I wanted to see some skin.

I never forgot how I felt walking out of there. Feeling myself. I don’t want anyone to miss out on that feeling, because they have been misgendered, or misunderstood in the past, due to social anxiety, or sensory issues. I want all of my guests to feel welcome, comfortable, honored and respected.
